Pink Julep at the Movies: The King's Speech

Mr. Julep and I went to see The King's Speech last week at The Odeon in Putney and I must say, this is one of the best films I have seen in a while. Starring Colin Firth as King George VI (father of the current Queen Elizabeth), Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue and Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth (we knew her as Queen Mum), The King's Speech tells the story of Bertie's (King George VI's nickname) succession to the throne after his brother David (played by Guy Pierce) abducates to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee who is not acceptable to marry the King, leader of the Church of England as C of E didn't recognize divorce at that time. The story of Berties succession is simply a backdrop for the real story of Bertie's severe stutter and how a man he didn't know helped him to become the king he had to be.

Besides being an intriguing story (one that I'd never known), this film boasts beautiful sets, fabulous costumes and amazing performances, particularly those of Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Guy Pierce! If Colin Firth doesn't win an Oscar for this film then it will be just as big of an upset as every time Leonardo DiCaprio has been snubbed... no it would actually be worse that that! This is a must see film!
