Roman and Williams: Perfectly Unique and Personal Spaces

Day two of Roman and Williams love.

Yesterday I posted about their commercial work, 

but today the real gems - residential.

Anyone remember this incredible space from Instyle?

No pretentious entry here, but sophisticated choices bring a dose of drama to the laid back vibe.

Warmed hues welcome while the lush textiles invite lounging..

Sunday afternonns, here I come..

After all the color and pattern - a dreamy white bedroom..

Really. If I could cut an paste that entire space into my own I would!

In every direction this room offers gorgeous vignettes

The Main living space continues the industrial/organic feel..

Not your usual white beach kitchen :) I love this! 

With all the light here, it's the perfect opportunity to venture into the dark side..

Bedrooms kept simple, with the emphasis on comfort.

note the bureau - how clever is that?

Lastly, the designers set free in a loft.. this is a more typical setting for their design style,

but they rock it!

I think that these pics may eat up the majority of space on my inspiration boards.

I love design that celebrates the occupants of the home,

instead of bowing to what is trendy at the moment, or design "rules".

I hope that we see more people claiming their space as their own, 

and creating spaces that bring them joy!

Fresh, Modern Cabin

Being Canadian, I've spent my fair share of time in dark, oppressive log cabins, and have a tendency to recoil from the words  "wood panelling"..

But this couple took the challenge of an old wood cabin head on..

with a few extra windows, an liberated floor plan, and loads of white paint,

this log home becomes the perfect escape.

Windows, windows and more windows - the view becomes the art.

Truly a great room.. isn't that sliding privacy panel on the loft fantastic?

Love the use of complementary red and green here - 

because complements intensify each other, they are best used in small doses.

Just enough colour to anchor this grouping in the massive space.

I wanted to see around this cornaer - alas, no pics.. but I do spy a screened in porch - love it :)

The den and bedroom were painted in subdued, nature-based, cocooning tones - restful and relaxing.

Note the lack of window treatments anywhere in this home, such a luxury to not need them.

I'd happily head here on the weekends..

greyed wood + pastels = scandi beach house perfection

Cottage and wood panelling are practically synonymous here.

For some reason everyone feels the need to line their weekend retreats with copious amounts

 of sometimes-garish pine and cedar planks.

So how to keep the rustic vibe but bring the panelling up to 2011?

Grey it down by applying a "wash" to the wood.

If the wood has a pre-existing finish, it has to be sanded first,

and calling in the professionals may be your best bet.

Simply apply watered down pale grey latex onto the bare planks, 

rubbing into the boards (with the grain) as you go, 

almost like a stain.

Saw it first in this stunner

and I'm loving it here...

The floors were actually stripped and left completely unfinished, to weather naturally.

That jaw-dropping wall of tile, which was already here, 

was originally orange and so was given the same treatment as the walls. 

Love, love, love the artisan feel.

The owners of this beach house are the founders of Ochre...

look at this office they've set up -

oh, to work with the sound of crashing waves in the background!!

With all the greyed down tones in the wood, 

clean, pale tints are the perfect accent colors - 

pastels are BACK.

It's a bit like driftwood and sea glass, translated into an interior, isn't it?

The outdoor space remains as equally low-key...

a modern table tucked under a homemade roof of bamboo poles lashed together - so totally clever...

sigh. so lovely.

I made it to Kempenfest,

our local arts and crafts extravaganza down by the lake.

Picked up an adorable baby gift for a friend (you're going to want one, and she is on Etsy - yay!)

and discovered a very cool sculptor / furniture designer that works with unique upcycled bits, 

will show you the pics later this week.

A bit windy so waves galore and the kids were off to "surf" on foam boards!

I have found so many beautiful images and homes this week that I will definitely be 

showing you another week of beachy good times before summer is over..

I learned something about myself this week, cruising through hundreds of beach properties -

 I like the smallest, rustic ones the best.

The spaces that called out for sandy feet and wet dogs..

can handle cast off quilts in a myriad of colors.

Those tiny little hideaways, chilling out along the shore, they have my heart.

Beach Week: Nantucket Cottage: Kaleidoscope of Happy

Yesterday we posted about small and minimal..

today we explore small with brilliant excess!

This cottage was featured in Country Living

and I never forgot it..

want to see why?!!

a hint of what lies within..

Anyone who paints their floor daffodil yellow is all right in my books :)
What's the trick to getting this huge range of color to live in harmony?
 Using colors with the same intensity - in this case, super-saturated hues.
Choose colors with the same amount of black and/or white
 in them and you can mix to your hearts content!

Clearly the cottage doesn't take itself to seriously,
which is lovely - I prefer relaxed decor at the beach..
but I'm curious - could you live with all that color?
