The Weekend Projects
If you are lucky, some weekends find you in a place like this,
with a book, and some spare time..
In reality, most weekends are spent like this..
painting a shelf for Cam's Hockey and baseball trophies to live on.
making birthday party invites for Coco's gingerbread-house-making party
(first one, not sure whatI've gotten myself into here!)
and baking a trial version.

for over the dining room table.
the classic white is simply beautiful, but I was considering jute twine,
or maybe cobalt blue for a different twist -
I'd love your opinions..
Found great instructions from Jen at Made by Girl
and she was even kind enough to email me all the extra electrical and mounting instructions
( of which there is a scary amount :)
If those all get done today, the kids are determined to get one of our trees up tomorrow,
so that will be Sunday.

Happy Halloween!
Tonight should be a breeze after the party we had this weekend!
25 12-years olds, some spooky decor, heaps of junk food and really LOUD music
all morphed into some unforgettable memories....
Bones kept bar..
and watched out over the action...
empty wine bottles filled with coloured water and re-labelled upped the creepy factor...
even water became arsenic :)
the gallery wall beyond...
The food table -
a folding table, with a piece of wood placed behind,
the whole shebang covered with dollar-store tablecloths and destroyed old cheesecloth.
Added some string lights and strobe lights for twinkle, black lights for effect.
Pickles became ogre fingers,
spider dogs became baby arachnids.
The tray was heaped with pizza later..
Chips served up in cauldrons.... such a healthy menu!!
We had a guest with life-threatening nut allergies
and so have been nut-free for a month..
but I was still relieved when they all went home safely.
First guests arriving, checking out their "fortunes"
(we did up a basket of spooky ones)...
On the floor you can see a few of the balloons -
this was the greatest idea, and so simple -
we placed glow bracelets inside 30 white balloons and they floated around the floor all night, luminous.
That was the last moment of calm,
from here on in it was all shrieks and giggles...
Miss N was Katy Perry, and in true form she danced the night away :)

Today, however, I had to deal with an issue that has been dragged on for far to long,
and it was finally resolved, but not without me losing my cool.
I'm trying very hard not to be bitter, because

My father worked at his grocery store seven days a week his entire life
(giving away as much food to people who needed it as he sold,
money was really never high up on the priority list).
I respect him so much for the way he has lived his life,
and he taught us to

if you read the blog you know I'm always espousing finding your own look,
not just blindly going off on the trend train...
but I couldn't resist...

Tomorrow hockey madness begins around here,
as my nine-year old goes through try-outs and draft picks...
I'm also working on a project for Tash's room,
a couple more to go and we'll be able to show you the whole shebang!

an anniversary and a weekend wish...
It's been a bit mushy around here this week!
We've celebrated our wedding anniversary.
Twelve years since we snuck off to the bahamas and made our vows.
And it's gotten better each year, truly.

D. surprised me with an Aritzia sweater and Fossil watch I didn't even know he knew I wanted,
that clever man,
AND a huge stash of sugar-free dark chocolate -

I keep a desk drawer just for goodies!
Does anyone else have a candy stash??
Since we married on his birthday (LONG story),
he got his long-awaited projector from the darlings and I.
Truthfully, it's a bit of a sneaky present,
since I am as excited to remove the current giant black box from our family room
as he is to watch 10 foot hi-def car chases!

let's build it beautiful from the start...
sometimes amongst the flurry of frustrated homeowners I work with I find myself becoming frustrated
with the accepted way to build things around here.
Why do we build this
when we could build this?
Perhaps if we took a little more care in the way we constructed this world of ours,
we wouldn't constantly be updating to make it more functional and more attractive....
just saying :)
summer is here, and there's way too much fun to be had here,
so posts may be a wee bit sparser for the next two months -
I know you understand :)

Katy Perry va-va-voom
Last night Tash and I joined another Mum and daughter for the Katy Perry concert in TO.
I was expecting it to be a whirlwind of costume changes,
and a bit outlandish, but..
it was one of the best concerts I've been to!
Of course, he best part was that Katy Perry can sing.
REALLY sing.
The show aspect was original,
based around a whimsical tale about a fictional Katy's adventure in candyland
(or sugarville, or something along those lines!)
Her costumes were fantastical,
she is such a beautiful woman that the audience really couldn't take their eyes off her.
But the absolute best part -
discovering Katy Perry has a wicked sense of humor.
Her wit, enthusiasm, and charm
had completely won us over by the closing song, "firework".

Katy and her husband have just bought a new home....
and I'm really thinking that the interior is going to have to undergo a huge redo
to keep up with this blue-haited whirlwind.
She floated around on a cotton candy cloud...
wore cupcakes as a top...
her microphone is bedazzled.
Katy Perry isn't exactly a brown kinda gal!
With such a traditional shell,
how to bridge the gap between the architecture and the people?
I'm thinking Miles Redd may be just the man for the job...

Today we are tackling the playroom,

The darlings won't even go in to this black hole of chaos any more.
Don't they look thrilled to bits to be in here, sorting?!!
We've finally reached the point where they are over
barbies, transformers, bratz dolls, bakugons, littlest pet shop, hot wheels, etc...
It's time for a bit of a purge.
By the end of the weekend they will both have one rubbermaid bin filled with their faves,
and the rest is being given away.
It's a little bittersweet, because they are growing up,
but more sweet than bitter :)
